University of Wolverhampton Launches New Centre for Cyber Resilience and AI
The University of Wolverhampton is set to officially open a new Centre for research into cyber security and artificial intelligence (AI) on Friday.
Introducing CYBRAI
Named the Centre for Cyber Resilience and Artificial Intelligence (CYBRAI), the initiative aims to address the growing regional and national needs for expertise in the critical field of digital security.
The centre will serve as a vital hub, bringing together academics, businesses, and government bodies to collectively tackle the significant challenges and opportunities present in today’s digital environment.
Focus on AI
AI is expected to be one of the primary areas of work for the centre. It holds potential for both developing defenses against ever-evolving digital threats and boosting economic growth. Experts believe AI technology has the capacity to automate repetitive tasks, potentially freeing up as much as 20% of employees’ time.
Responding to the Threat Landscape
The establishment of CYBRAI comes at a crucial time, given the significant increase in cyber attacks. According to The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025, an estimated 43% of businesses and 30% of charities in the UK experienced a cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. This equates to approximately 600,000 businesses and 60,000 charities.
Recent high-profile cyber incidents involving major retailers such as Marks and Spencer, the Co-op, and Harrods underscore the widespread nature of these threats.

A Commitment to Digital Security
Commenting on the launch, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Prashant Pillai stated, “The establishment of CYBRAI underscores the university’s commitment to addressing the critical challenges and opportunities presented by the digital revolution.” He added, “This centre will be a vital hub for research, innovation, and skills development in cyber resilience and AI, not only for our region but with national and international impact.”
