Google Labs, the experimental division of the tech giant, has unveiled an innovative online project that brings a creative twist to the classic game of chess. GenChess, as the project is called, leverages Google’s advanced image-generation model Gemini Imagen 3, allowing players to design their own unique chess pieces through text prompts.
Customize Your Chess Pieces with GenChess
To start creating, users need to log in with a Gmail account. Once logged in, they can click the “Generate” button and describe the desired theme for their chess set—for instance, a set inspired by sushi or pizza.
GenChess offers two distinct styles:
- Classic: A traditional chess set design.
- Creative: A more abstract and artistic take on chess pieces.
The model generates a full set based on the theme provided. If a specific piece, such as the king, doesn’t meet expectations, players can refine its design by providing additional text instructions.

Once the customization process is complete, users can generate an opponent. In testing, Google matched a sushi-themed set with a bot that used a taco-themed set. Players can choose from three difficulty levels (easy, medium, hard) and select between two timing options (5/3 or 10/0).
AI Meets Design and Chess
Google’s GenChess experiment is a simple yet innovative tool designed to demonstrate the collaboration between AI, design, and chess. A Google spokesperson explained, “The goal is to showcase how AI-powered image generation can make creativity and gameplay accessible to everyone.”
To coincide with the launch of GenChess, Google announced four additional chess-related initiatives aligned with the start of the World Chess Championship, which began on Monday. Among these initiatives is Google’s collaboration with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), inviting participants to join a Kaggle coding challenge to create AI-powered chess engines. Kaggle is a Google-owned platform for data science and machine learning projects.

Chess Gem: A Conversational Chess Experience
Next month, Google will introduce a new feature called Chess Gem within the Gemini App. This conversational chess game will let players test their skills against an AI-powered language model while engaging in light-hearted banter. However, this feature will only be available to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

Creativity and Chess Redefined by AI
Google’s GenChess and its associated initiatives illustrate how AI can go beyond mere functionality to inspire creativity and personalization in classic games. By merging technology, design, and strategy, these projects aim to breathe new life into the world of chess while making it more engaging and customizable for players of all skill levels.
